MyKitchenRadar is a family kitchen app that tells you how many days each food at home will last, like "atta: about 9–14 days", and reminds everyone before it runs out. This guide has the survey numbers for atta in every major state, and what they mean for your bag.

Atta per person per month, by state
How much wheat and atta one person ate in 30 days in 2023-24 (MoSPI HCES, Statements 5R and 5U, observed). "Per person" averages everyone, children included. In rice-eating states, a 10 kg atta bag outlasts the 3–6 month pantry life of whole wheat flour. For those homes, the rice guide matters more, and a 1 kg or 5 kg atta pack is the better buy.
What the guidelines recommend
India's dietary guidelines give cereals and millets together, not atta alone. These are recommended amounts, raw weight (ICMR-NIN Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024, Table 1.6). They include rice, wheat and millets, and the guidelines say 20–30% of an adult's cereals (20% for children up to 10) should be millets.
| Person | Cereals and millets a day | A month (30 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Man, sedentary | 260 g | 7.8 kg |
| Man, moderate work | 370 g | 11.1 kg |
| Woman, sedentary | 190 g | 5.7 kg |
| Woman, moderate work | 270 g | 8.1 kg |
| Child 1–3 | 100 g | 3.0 kg |
| Child 4–6 | 160 g | 4.8 kg |
| Child 7–9 | 200 g | 6.0 kg |
| Boy / girl 10–12 | 280 g / 250 g | 8.4 kg / 7.5 kg |
| Boy / girl 13–15 | 390 g / 300 g | 11.7 kg / 9.0 kg |
| Boy / girl 16–18 | 450 g / 315 g | 13.5 kg / 9.5 kg |
| Man / woman over 60 | 170 g / 140 g | 5.1 kg / 4.2 kg |
In a wheat-eating home, most of this is atta. In urban Punjab, for example, the observed 7.0 kg of wheat per adult share sits inside the recommended 7.8 kg of all cereals for a sedentary man.
The method
Each range on this page uses the same four steps as the estimator and the app.
- Atta per adult share per day. Survey kg per person per 30 days ÷ 30 ÷ 0.906 (town or city) or 0.928 (village). Urban Punjab: 6.329 ÷ 30 ÷ 0.906 = 0.2329 kg. All-India urban: 3.622 ÷ 30 ÷ 0.906 = 0.1333 kg. The 0.906 and 0.928 come from MoSPI's 2025 nutrition note (2,240 ÷ 2,472 and 2,212 ÷ 2,383 kcal).
- Adult shares. By energy need, a sedentary man is 1.00 (ICMR-NIN 2020). Woman 0.79, child of 8 0.81, child of 5 0.64, woman over 60 0.73, man over 60 0.82.
- Daily use. Family of 4 in urban Punjab: 0.2329 × 3.24 = 0.755 kg a day, about 22.6 kg a month.
- Range. A full bag counts as ± 10% and the survey-based daily use as ± 15% (the app's settings). For 10 kg: low = 9 ÷ (0.755 × 1.15) = 10.4 days, high = 11 ÷ (0.755 × 0.85) = 17.2 days. Rounded, about 10–17 days.
The survey's wheat column counts wheat and atta from the ration shop (free or subsidized) and from the market. The questionnaire also lists maida, suji and other wheat products in the same cereal block, and the report's state table does not split them out.
How to store atta
| Flour | Pantry, unopened | After opening | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole wheat flour (nearest match for atta) | 3–6 months | 6–8 months in the fridge | USDA FoodKeeper |
| White flour (nearest match for maida) | 6–12 months | 6–8 months in the pantry, 1 year in the fridge | USDA FoodKeeper |
USDA FoodKeeper has no entry for atta itself, so the table uses its whole wheat flour times. Packaged atta in India must carry a use-by or expiry date under FSSAI's labelling rules. Go by that date first.
Match the pack to your use. If your family needs more than 3 months to finish a bag, as the tables show for most rice-eating homes with 10 kg, buy a smaller pack.
Signs you are running low
- The bag folds over twice at the top, or you scoop from the corners.
- The atta tin is refilled from the last bag in the store cupboard.
- Dinner plans change from rotis to rice because "there is not enough atta".
A simple rule: buy more when about 5 days of use are left. For a family of 4 in urban Punjab (0.755 kg a day) that is about 3.8 kg. At the All-India city average (0.432 kg a day) it is about 2.2 kg.
From a state average to your own kitchen
These tables give a fair first guess for your state. MyKitchenRadar starts from a survey figure for your food culture, then asks "How much atta is left?" now and then. One tap on Full, Half, Low or Out, and the range moves to how your family really cooks. When atta drops below your "always keep" level, it goes on the shared buy list, which is ready the evening before shopping day.

Questions
How much atta for 1 person per month?
About 4.0 kg for one adult man at the All-India city average, 7.0 kg in urban Punjab and 6.1 kg in urban Uttar Pradesh (MoSPI HCES 2023-24, observed). In rice-eating Tamil Nadu it is under 1 kg.
How much atta for 2 persons per month?
For 2 adults, about 7.2 kg at the All-India city average, 10.9 kg in urban Uttar Pradesh and 12.5 kg in urban Punjab.
How long does a 10 kg bag of atta last a family of 4?
About 18–30 days at the All-India city average, 12–20 days in urban Uttar Pradesh and 10–17 days in urban Punjab, for 2 adults and children of 8 and 5.
How many chapatis can you make from 1 kg of atta?
We found no official figure for this. It depends on the size and thickness of each chapati, so MyKitchenRadar counts atta by weight instead.
How long does atta keep?
Atta has no USDA FoodKeeper entry. The nearest match, whole wheat flour, keeps 3–6 months in the pantry and 6–8 months in the fridge after opening. Always follow the use-by date on the pack.
Is the survey figure only atta, or all wheat?
It is the survey's wheat column, which records wheat and atta together from every source, including free ration wheat. The report's table does not split atta from other wheat products.
