MyKitchenRadar is a family kitchen app that tells you how many days each food at home will last, like "rice: about 6–11 days", and reminds everyone before it runs out. Below are the rice tables its first guess is built on, each with its source.
To get a number for your own family, use the free estimator.
How long a rice bag lasts, by family size
All ranges below are days. They use what households actually ate in 2023-24 (MoSPI HCES, observed) and the app's countdown method, explained further down. "3+ months" means more than 90 days, where the countdown stops. A top end of 90 means "90 days or more".
The families used in every table:
| Family | Who | Adult shares |
|---|---|---|
| 1 man | adult man | 1.00 |
| 1 woman | adult woman | 0.79 |
| 2 adults | man and woman | 1.79 |
| 3 | 2 adults and a child of 8 | 2.60 |
| 4 | 2 adults and children of 8 and 5 | 3.24 |
| 5 | family of 4 and a grandmother of 70 | 3.97 |
| 6 | family of 5 and a grandfather of 72 | 4.79 |

| Your family uses a day | 25 lb bag | 50 lb bag | 10 kg bag | 25 kg bag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 lb (113 g) | 100 days | 200 days | 88 days | 220 days |

The survey lists more states and union territories. We show the larger ones and Delhi.
Cereal use is falling. In villages, total cereals eaten per person per month dropped from 12.72 kg in 1999-2000 to 9.35 kg in 2023-24. In towns and cities it fell from 10.42 kg to 8.02 kg (MoSPI HCES 2023-24, Table 3.7). Older rules of thumb about rice per person will over-count.
The method
Every range on this page comes from four steps. They are the same steps the estimator and the app use.
- Rice per adult share per day. Survey kg per person per 30 days ÷ 30 ÷ 0.906 (town or city) or 0.928 (village). Urban Tamil Nadu: 6.467 ÷ 30 ÷ 0.906 = 0.2379 kg. All-India urban: 4.193 ÷ 30 ÷ 0.906 = 0.1543 kg. The 0.906 and 0.928 are MoSPI's calories per person divided by calories per consumer unit in 2023-24. That is 2,240 ÷ 2,472 and 2,212 ÷ 2,383 (press note of 2 Jul 2025).
- Adult shares. Each person counts as a share of a sedentary adult man by energy need (ICMR-NIN 2020). Woman 0.79, child of 8 0.81, child of 5 0.64, woman over 60 0.73, man over 60 0.82.
- Daily use. Rice per adult share × adult shares. Family of 4 in urban Tamil Nadu: 0.2379 × 3.24 = 0.771 kg a day.
- Range. The app counts a full bag as ± 10% and the survey-based daily use as ± 15%. For 10 kg: low = 9 ÷ (0.771 × 1.15) = 10.1 days, high = 11 ÷ (0.771 × 0.85) = 16.8 days. Rounded, about 10–17 days.
As a cross-check, India's dietary guidelines point the same way. ICMR-NIN 2024 (Table 1.6) recommends cereals and millets, raw weight, of 260 g a day for a sedentary man and 190 g for a sedentary woman. A child of 7–9 gets 200 g and a woman over 60 gets 140 g. For the Tamil family in the how-it-works example that adds up to 790 g of cereals a day. Rice is 89.5% of cereals eaten in urban Tamil Nadu (MoSPI HCES 2023-24, Table 3.8U), which gives about 0.71 kg of rice a day. The survey-based 0.79 kg a day for the same family is close.
How to store rice
| Rice | Pantry, unopened | After opening | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| White or wild rice | 2 years | 1 year in the pantry, 6 months in the fridge | USDA FoodKeeper |
| Brown rice | 1 year | 1 year in the pantry, 6 months in the fridge | USDA FoodKeeper |
Keep the bag closed and dry. A 25 kg bag lasts a single adult more than 3 months, still well inside white rice's 2-year pantry life. For white rice, bag size is a question of cash and space, not spoilage. Buy brown rice in amounts you finish within a year.
Signs you are running low, and when to rebuy
- The scoop reaches the bottom fold of the bag, or you tip the bag to fill the measure.
- You open a second bag sooner than planned because the first is "nearly done".
- The cook asks "is there rice?" before starting dinner.
A simple rule: buy more when about 5 days of use are left. For a family of 4 in urban Tamil Nadu (0.771 kg a day) that is about 3.9 kg of rice. At the All-India city average (0.500 kg a day) it is about 2.5 kg.
Guests and festivals use rice faster. Two extra adult men at every meal add 2 adult shares, which takes a Tamil Nadu family of 4 from 0.77 to about 1.25 kg a day.
Where the tables stop and the app starts
A table describes an average family. MyKitchenRadar starts from the same kind of survey number for your food culture and family, then now and then asks "How much rice is left?". In the 10 kg example, one tap on Half at day 10 moved the estimate from 0.79 kg a day to about 0.62 kg a day. The rice countdown runs on every phone in the family, and rice joins the buy list once it drops below the level you always keep.
Try the estimator with your own bag and family, see how the countdown works, or go to the MyKitchenRadar home page.

Questions
How long will 10 kg of rice last for 2 people?
For 2 adults, about 28–47 days at the All-India city average. At the Tamil Nadu city average it is about 18–30 days (MoSPI HCES 2023-24, observed use).
How long does 5 kg of rice last for one person?
For one adult man, about 25–42 days at the All-India city average and about 16–27 days at the Tamil Nadu city average. For one adult woman it is about 32–53 and 21–34 days.
How many kg of rice does one person eat in a month in India?
On average 4.2 kg in towns and cities and 5.1 kg in villages, counting children too (MoSPI HCES 2023-24, observed). It runs from under 1 kg in Rajasthan and Punjab to over 10 kg in rural Odisha.
How much rice does a family of 4 need for a year?
About 182 kg at the All-India city average and about 281 kg at the Tamil Nadu city average, for 2 adults and children of 8 and 5. That is about 15 kg and 23 kg a month.
How long does a 25 lb bag of rice last?
For a family of 4 eating like an Indian city household, about 18–29 days (All-India average) or 12–19 days (Tamil Nadu). We have not loaded an official US rice figure yet. Most US families eat less rice, so the bag will likely last longer.
How long does uncooked rice keep?
Unopened white rice keeps about 2 years in the pantry and about 1 year after opening, per USDA FoodKeeper. Brown rice keeps about 1 year.
Does the survey count ration rice?
Yes. MoSPI's survey counts free and subsidized ration-shop rice as household consumption, so the averages include it. If you have a ration bag at home, count it as part of your stock.
