> India's ICMR-NIN guidelines (2024) recommend 300 ml of milk or curd a day for adults. Children, teenagers, pregnant and breastfeeding women and people over 60 get 350–400 ml. For a family of 4 with children of 8 and 5, that adds up to 1,350 ml a day, about 9.5 liters a week or 40 liters a month. The US Dietary Guidelines 2025–2030 give 3 cups of dairy a day for adults and 2½ for young children. If all of it is milk, a US family of 4 needs about 4.8 gallons a week. Both are recommended amounts, not measurements of what families drink.

MyKitchenRadar is a family kitchen app that tells you how many days each food at home will last, like "milk: finishes today", and reminds everyone before it runs out. Milk is the item that runs out at breakfast, so this guide gives the official amounts by age for India and the US.

To see how long the milk at home will last, use the [free estimator](/tools/how-long-will-it-last/).

**Read this first.** All figures here are **recommended** amounts. India's figures count milk and curd together. The US figures count all dairy, including yogurt and cheese. Neither is a measure of what families actually drink.

## Milk per person, by age (India)

Recommended milk and curd a day (ICMR-NIN Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024, Table 1.6). Weekly is 7 days, monthly 30 days.

| Person | Per day | Per week | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult man or woman, 19–60 | 300 ml | 2.1 L | 9.0 L |
| Pregnant woman | 400 ml | 2.8 L | 12.0 L |
| Breastfeeding woman | 400 ml | 2.8 L | 12.0 L |
| Child 1–3 | 350 ml | 2.45 L | 10.5 L |
| Child 4–6 | 350 ml | 2.45 L | 10.5 L |
| Child 7–9 | 400 ml | 2.8 L | 12.0 L |
| Boy or girl 10–18 | 400 ml | 2.8 L | 12.0 L |
| Man or woman over 60 | 400 ml | 2.8 L | 12.0 L |

The same amount applies to sedentary and moderately active adults. For babies under 1, the guideline says to continue breast milk.

## Milk for the whole family (India)

Each family's total is every person's row from the table above, added up. Family 3 is 2 adults and a child of 8. Family 4 adds a child of 5, family 5 a grandmother of 70 and family 6 a grandfather of 72.

| Family | Per day | Per week | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 adult | 300 ml | 2.1 L | 9.0 L |
| 2 adults | 600 ml | 4.2 L | 18.0 L |
| 3 | 1,000 ml | 7.0 L | 30.0 L |
| 4 | 1,350 ml | 9.45 L | 40.5 L |
| 5 | 1,750 ml | 12.25 L | 52.5 L |
| 6 | 2,150 ml | 15.05 L | 64.5 L |

This is milk and curd together. If you set curd at home from your own milk, the whole amount comes out of the milk you buy. If you buy curd separately, take that out first.

### Checking a daily delivery

If milk comes to your door every day, compare the delivery with the "per day" column. A family of 4 at the guideline needs 1,350 ml. A 1 liter delivery covers 1,000 ml, and a 1.5 liter delivery leaves 150 ml spare for tea and guests.

## Milk for the whole family (US)

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025–2030 list dairy servings by calorie level. One serving is 1 cup of milk, ¾ cup of yogurt or 1 oz of cheese.

| Calorie level | 1,000 | 1,200 | 1,400 | 1,600 to 3,200 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dairy a day | 2 cups | 2½ cups | 2½ cups | 3 cups |

To match people to calorie levels, we used the sedentary column of Table A2-2 in the 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines. A man of 35 needs 2,400 kcal and a woman of 33 needs 1,800 kcal. A boy of 8 needs 1,400, a girl of 5 1,200, a woman of 70 1,600 and a man of 72 2,000. The table below assumes every serving is milk, so it is the most milk the guideline would call for.

| Family | Cups a day | About, in liters a day | Gallons a week |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 adult | 3 | 0.71 L | 1.3 gal |
| 2 adults | 6 | 1.42 L | 2.6 gal |
| 3 (with a boy of 8) | 8½ | 2.01 L | 3.7 gal |
| 4 (with a boy of 8 and a girl of 5) | 11 | 2.60 L | 4.8 gal |
| 5 (and a grandmother of 70) | 14 | 3.31 L | 6.1 gal |
| 6 (and a grandfather of 72) | 17 | 4.02 L | 7.4 gal |

A US gallon is 16 cups, about 3.79 liters. A family that eats yogurt and cheese every day needs less milk than this table shows.

## The method

1. **Per-person amounts.** India: ICMR-NIN 2024, Table 1.6, milk and curd in ml per day. US: dairy cups per calorie level from the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines, with each person's calorie level from Table A2-2 of the 2020–2025 guidelines (sedentary).
2. **Family total.** Each person's amount, added up. Family of 4 in India: 300 + 300 + 400 + 350 = 1,350 ml a day. In the US: 3 + 3 + 2½ + 2½ = 11 cups.
3. **Week and month.** × 7 and × 30. 1,350 ml × 7 = 9.45 liters. 11 cups × 7 = 77 cups ÷ 16 = 4.8 gallons.

**How the app's first guess differs.** The [estimator](/tools/how-long-will-it-last/) and the app count milk alone, with curd as its own item. For Indian kitchens they start from 250 ml of milk per adult share a day. That is the app's own split of the guideline's 300 ml into 250 ml milk and 50 ml curd. For American kitchens they start from 2 cups. Both are scaled by each person's energy needs. The guideline gives children more milk than energy scaling does, so the app's first guess for a family with young children is lower than the table above. For the Indian family of 4 it is about 0.81 liters of milk a day, until one-tap checks show the family's real rate.

India's household survey records milk bought over the last 7 days, but the printed 2023-24 report shows only what households spent on milk, in rupees, not the liters. There is no official "observed" figure to show here yet.

## How to store milk

| Milk | Fridge, unopened | After opening | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milk, plain or flavored | Use the date on the pack (frozen, 3 months) | Use the date on the pack | USDA FoodKeeper |
| Ultra-pasteurized milk | 1–3 months | 7–10 days | USDA FoodKeeper |
| Shelf-stable (UHT) milk, cartons | 6–12 months in the pantry | 5–7 days in the fridge | USDA FoodKeeper |
| Yogurt (nearest match for curd) | 1–2 weeks from purchase | not listed | USDA FoodKeeper |

Indian milk pouches carry a use-by date, which FSSAI's labelling rules make mandatory. Go by that date. FoodKeeper has no entry for dahi or curd set at home, so we do not give a time for it.

## Signs you are running low

- Only one pouch is left in the fridge after evening tea.
- Morning tea and a child's milk need more than what is in the jug.
- Curd for tomorrow cannot be set because tonight's milk is all spoken for.

At the app's first guess, a 1 liter pack lasts a family of 4 about 1–2 days, so "low" for milk means "buy today or tomorrow". In the app, milk turns red at today or 1 day left, which is the moment to send someone to the shop.

## Let the app watch the milk

At the guideline amount, a family of 4 gets through a liter of milk in less than a day. MyKitchenRadar shows milk on the Today screen with a plain countdown. It sends an alert at 6 pm the evening before milk is expected to finish and again at 8:00 that day. Milk then sits on the buy list every phone in the family can see. When milk is about to go off, it gets a "Use first" label so it goes into tea or curd first.

## Questions

### How much milk does a family of 4 need per day?

In India, about 1,350 ml of milk and curd a day for 2 adults and children of 8 and 5 (ICMR-NIN 2024, recommended). In the US, about 11 cups (2.6 liters) of dairy a day for a similar family, if all of it is milk.

### How many gallons of milk does a family of 4 need per week?

About 4.8 US gallons a week for 2 adults and children of 8 and 5, if every dairy serving in the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines is milk. Yogurt and cheese count as dairy too, so most families need less milk than that.

### How much milk should a child drink per day?

ICMR-NIN 2024 recommends 350 ml of milk or curd a day for children aged 1–6 and 400 ml from age 7 to 18. The US guidelines give 2 cups of dairy a day at 1,000 kcal and 2½ cups at 1,200–1,400 kcal.

### How much milk per day by age for adults?

300 ml of milk or curd for adults aged 19–60 in India, rising to 400 ml for people over 60 and for pregnant or breastfeeding women (ICMR-NIN 2024, Table 1.6). The US guidelines give 3 cups of dairy from 1,600 kcal upward.

### Is 1 liter of milk a day enough for a family of 4?

Not at the Indian guideline. A family of 4 with children of 8 and 5 needs about 1,350 ml of milk and curd a day. A 1 liter daily delivery leaves 350 ml to come from extra milk or curd.

### How long does milk last in the fridge?

For ordinary milk, USDA FoodKeeper says to go by the use-by date on the pack. Ultra-pasteurized milk keeps 7–10 days after opening, and shelf-stable (UHT) milk 5–7 days in the fridge after opening.
